CAS President's International Fellowship Initiative

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) continues to lead the way in fostering international scientific collaboration through the President’s International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI). This programme promotes global research mobility by inviting scientists, postdoctoral researchers, and students from over 100 countries to collaborate with top researchers in China.

With more than 5,000 fellows sponsored to date, the PIFI programme offers a range of fellowship opportunities tailored to different career stages and research goals. Whether you are a distinguished scientist, an emerging young leader, or part of a research group, PIFI provides structured support to help you make meaningful contributions to your field.

CAS PIFI Programme

The PIFI programme offers five categories of fellowships:

  1. PIFI Distinguished Scientist: For internationally recognised scientists who can contribute to strategic projects. Participants conduct academic exchange activities at CAS-affiliated institutions over one to two weeks.
  2. PIFI Ambassador: Designed for PIFI fellows who have achieved significant results. Ambassadors visit CAS-affiliated institutions, contributing to exchanges at the academy level for two weeks.
  3. PIFI Young Leader: Aimed at excellent doctoral and master’s students as well as postdoctoral fellows. Participants engage in training and exchanges for at least one week, visiting CAS institutions.
  4. PIFI Visiting Scientist: Ideal for experienced researchers, this category allows participants to engage in research activities at CAS for one to six months.
  5. PIFI Group: This category funds international team leaders with significant academic achievements to conduct cooperative research with CAS leading teams for up to three years.

Each fellowship offers comprehensive financial assistance covering living expenses, travel, and insurance, giving participants the chance to work in some of China’s leading research institutions.

CAS is home to over 70,000 talented researchers and more than half of China's major science facilities, providing an unmatched environment for innovation and collaboration. PIFI fellows benefit from access to world-class resources and the opportunity to build lasting research partnerships.
