The Clean Energy Transition Partnership (CETPartnership)

Tuesday, July 19, 2022

The Clean Energy Transition Partnership (CETPartnership) is a new transnational initiative (part of the European Partnerships under Horizon Europe) on joint Research, Technological Development, and Innovation (RTDI) programming to boost and accelerate the energy transition, building upon regional and national RTDI funding programmes.

The transition envisioned by the CETPartnership will be a joint effort from industry, public organisations, research, and citizen organisations to make Europe the front-runner in clean energy innovation and implementation.

The CETPartnership will foster transnational innovation ecosystems from the very local and regional level, up to the transnational European level, thus overcoming a fragmented European landscape. Moreover, it intends to reach out to collaboration with funding partners beyond Europe, in order to broaden the knowledge and experience bases and introduce European solutions and stakeholders to the global value chains.

The overarching aim is to empower the energy transition and contribute to the EU’s goal of becoming the first climate-neutral continent by 2050.

The CETPartnership enables 55 national and regional RTDI programme owners and managers from 30 countries to align their priorities, pool national budgets amounting to 210 Mill EUR for the first two joint calls in 2022 and 2023, as well as to implement annual joint calls from 2022 to 2027.

The common vision of the CETPartnership is already manifested in its Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) that has been co-created in a broad engagement process during 2020.The SRIA was endorsed together with the European Commission (DG RTD and ENER) in November 2020. This articulates the common goal of:

  • Building innovation ecosystems that support capacity building at all levels
  • Developing and demonstrating technology and solutions for the transition of energy systems
  • Building a transnational transformative Joint Programming Platform

Having such a broad vision led the CETPartnership to identify seven challenges within the SRIA that the partnership shall focus on. These challenges have been transformed into Transition Initiatives (TRIs), each having a specific focus, thus bringing together different partners of the CETPartnership Consortium, willing to invest in that area. These Transition Initiatives are led by different partners within the CETPartnership consortium.

The Transition Initiatives are as follows:

TRI Number TRI Name TRI Lead
TRI 1 Integrated Net-zero-emissins Energy System Michele de Nigris – Ricerca sul Sistema Energetico (RSE)
TRI 2 Enhanced zero emission Power Technologies Francesco Basile – Ministero dell’Università e della  Ricerca (MUR)
TRI 3 Enabling Climate Neutrality with Storage Technologies, Renewable Fuels and CCU/CCS Ragnhild Rønneberg – Research Council of Norway (RCN)
TRI 4 Efficient zero emission Heating and Cooling Solutions Gerdi Breembroek -Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO)
TRI 5 Integrated Regional Energy Systems Fredrik Lundström – Swedish Energy Agency (SWEA)
TRI 6 Integrated Industrial Energy Systems Fredrik Backman – Swedish Energy Agency (SWEA)
TRI 7 Integration in the Built Environment Beatriz Gomez – Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI)

Upcoming Call:

The FIRST Call for proposals for the CETPartnership will be launched on the 14th of September 2022 and it will be structured into different thematic modules. Each Transition Initiative (TRI) will develop one or two Call modules based on their strategic topics and content, enabling coverage of the whole spectrum of their specific SRIA challenge.

In such calls, Maltese partners will have the opportunity to collaborate with international entities to enhance their R&I capabilities within the scope of the CETPartnership.

An online informative CETPartnership Call Launch Event for potential applicants will take place on the 13th of September 2022. Details about the thematic structure and Q&A about the call will be shared at the event. This event shall also include an opportunity for virtual networking.

More information on the event and on the electronic submission system, documents and partner search tool will be published on the CETPartership website (https://cetpartnership.eu/calls), on the MCST website and plumtri.org.
