The open consultation frames into the development of an ambitious Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) which is one of the central aims of the
Coordination and Support Action (CSA) BrainHealth (November 2023 - November 2025) launched by the European Commission. The present document delineates the research and innovation roadmap, which will be jointly addressed by the European Partnership for BrainHealth (BH) (EP BrainHealth).
About Brain Health
According to the World Health Organization, Brain health is the state of brain functioning across cognitive, sensory, social-emotional, behavioural and motor domains, allowing a person to realize their full potential over the life course, irrespective of the presence or absence of disorders.
About the European Partnership for Brain Health (EP BrainHealth)
The EP BrainHealth and its SRIA are the result of enduring transnational collaboration to jointly embrace the challenge of promoting and preserving BH and reduce the great burden posed by brain disorders which include neurological, sensory, and mental aspects, and their consequences for patients, families, caregivers, healthcare systems, and society. This collaboration builds on previous and current European transnational initiatives supported by the European Commission such as the Network of European Funding for Neuroscience Research (ERA-NET NEURON), the EU Joint Programme for Neurodegenerative Disease Research (JPND), and the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Flagship Human Brain Project (HBP). More recently, the Coordination and Support Action (CSA) “European Brain Research Area” (EBRA) was also supported by the EU as a first step to create synergies among these European initiatives together with the main players in the brain community represented by the European Brain Council (EBC).
About the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda - Brain Health
The current CSA BrainHealth builds upon these past experiences and successes to develop a SRIA that addresses current and future challenges. From its inception, this roadmap has been designed to capitalise on the Shared European Brain Research Agenda (SEBRA) developed under the CSA EBRA, as well as on previous achievements and networks, while stretching out toward broader collaborations to expand its reach and impact. It involves the European Commission (EC) as well as a core of member states representatives collaborating with private funders and a broad variety of stakeholders building upon the advice of leading scientific and healthcare experts; the goal being to improve citizen’s BH and quality of life.
